iContact Lens FAQ
Who are candidates for Implantable Contact Lens (iContact Lens)?
If you are between 21 and 45, with shortsighted and/or astigmatism and had no eye disease, you are a suitable candidate for iContact Lens.
Where is the lens placed in the eye?
The lens is placed in the “posterior chamber”, behind the iris and in front of the eye’s crystalline lens. The lens does not touch any internal eye structures and stays in position.
Will the lens dry out or get dirty like a contact lens?
No. iContact Lens avoids problems experienced with traditional contact lenses. It is designed to remain in place inside your eye, without maintenance. It is recommended that you visit your doctor annually to ensure everything is fine.
What is involved in the iContact Lens Procedure?
Two small openings will be made in the peripheral iris, to guard against possible elevation of intraocular pressure immediately following the implantation of the iContact Lens. This procedure is called peripheral iridotomy or PI. It will take place within two weeks before the iContact Lens procedure by using a Yag-laser.
The actual iContact Lens procedure typically takes approximately 15 minutes to perform on an outpatient basis. Anesthetic eye drops are used to numb the eyes. Eye drops or oral medication will be prescribed. You will need to come back the next day for a follow-up visit.
How long does the lens stay in my eye?
The lens is intended to remain in place in the eye without maintenance. Should it become necessary, the lens can be removed by a certified ophthalmologist.
Can the lens be felt once it is in place?
The lens is not noticeable after it is put in place. It does not attach to any structures within the eye and stays in position.
What if my vision changes?
If during your annual eye exam major changes in your vision are observed, the lens can be removed or replaced. With the lens, you can still wear glasses or contact lens if necessary. The lens does not treat presbyopia or eliminate the need for reading glasses due to ageing.
How quickly can I go back to sports and activities?
Due to quick recovery after this treatment, you can leave the clinic after a few hours. You will be able to enjoy your new sight almost immediately and go back to your active lifestyle.
