READING VISION

Introduction
It is a fact of life that after age 40, everyone loses some ability to focus up close. What causes the loss of near vision as we grow older? It could be caused by Presbyopia and Hyperopia.

Presbyopia
Loss of Reading Vision
Presbyopia is an optical condition caused by the loss of ability to focus on near objects.Presbyopia is the reason that reading glasses become necessary, typically in the age range of 40s onwards and will continue to deteriorate until the age of 60, even for people who have excellent unaided distance vision. Those who suffer from presbyopia have difficulty reading menus, handphones, newspapers, magazines, labels, watches and other close up objects.

Hyperopia
Longsightedness
Hyperopia is caused by the eye’s surface (cornea) being too flat, so that light is focused behind the retina instead of on the retina. Young eyes are often strong enough to compensate which is why hyperopia only starts to be a problem after the age of 40. Patients should realise that even correcting hyperopia with LASIK procedure will not eliminate
the potential need for reading glasses when reaching middle age.
Solution : LASIK Monovision
In this technique, the doctor will plan to modify the degree of treatment applied to your non dominant eye in an attempt to help you see better up close and maintain reading vision without the use of glasses. However, this does not eliminate (only delays) the need for reading glasses as Presbyopia progresses as one ages. Not all patients will adapt to Monovision, as there is a loss of depth perception (since one eye is focused at distance and the other eye is focused at near). Therefore, persons considering Monovision with LASIK may first adapt to Monovision with contact lenses.
