What myopia control treatments are available?

Atropine

Atropine is a pharmaceutical approach which is one of the most effective options with generally low risk in slowing Myopia progression in children.

In myopia control, children are given 0.01%, a very low concentration of Atropine, which aims to slow the progression of Myopia, and to prevent rapid progression.

Children using Atropine in Myopia control usually wear glasses during the daytime, and use a drop of Atropine in each eye at night before sleep. This eye drop usually do not sting, and will not affect the child’s vision or focusing abilities.

Myopia Control Glasses

Special lenses are available to help with different problems that children face. These lenses target towards the root cause of the problem and helps to ease the strain of the child.

Progressive Addition Lenses (PALs)
Used to control the rapid progression of myopia, especially in children with  accommodative response related symptoms such as eyestrain. This lens is designed to provide the proper distance prescription and a lower near prescription to read or for any close-up work.

Children’s Myovision spectacle lenses
Designed to tackle against Peripheral Retinal Hyperopic Defocus – the technical name of an optical problem faced by most myopic children where the eyes are more elongated’ in shape compared to normal eyes. As the image on the peripheral retina is out-of-focused, it triggersmyopia to progress even faster.

Bifocal glasses incorporating Prisms
Prism is incorporated in the reading addition portion of the glasses and hence, showing promising results in reducing the progression of myopia in children. These lenses will require optometrist in prescribing and dispensing after a thorough investigation of the child’s vision.

Ortho-K (Orthokeratology)

Ortho-K are specially designed contact lenses that reshape or flatten their cornea while they wear it to sleep at night and have clear vision throughout the day without having glasses or contact lenses.

Who can use Ortho-K?

  • Mild to moderate short sighted children and adults with or without mild to moderate astigmatism.
  • Children whose myopia keeps getting worse.
  • Myopic children who play sports and swim.
  • Myopic children whose eyes are still developing and therefore are not candidates for LASIK eye surgery.
  • Myopic children and adults who dislike wearing glasses.
  • Myopic children who continually lose or damage their glasses.
